Applications:

Isopropyl alcohol dissolves a wide range of non-polar compounds. Evaporating quickly, the available grades don’t leave behind oil traces when used as a cleaning fluid, unlike other common solvents. Relatively non-toxic and used widely as a solvent and cleaning fluid, especially for situations where there can be oils or oil-based residues which would not be easily cleaned with water, conveniently evaporating and (depending on water content and other potential factors) posing less of a risk of corrosion or rusting than plain water.

Cleaning: IPA is a common cleaner and degreaser where water cleaning poses a risk such as electrical equipment and components in manufacturing. It is a perfect surface disinfectant due to its antibacterial properties, evaporating quickly it leaves no streaks on glass or mirrors and is a common ingredient in hospital cleaning products.

Extractives: Since IPA can solubilize non-polar compounds easily it is frequently used in the process of extracting oils, fats, flavors, and waxes. One process of this can be a quick wash with cold IPA that helps improve the separation of trichomes.

Automotive: IPA can be used as a thinner for resins, paints, and combining substrates with resin. It degreases and cleanses a cars’ surface, removing wax prepping it for paint, and polishing. It is a common ingredient in windshield washer fluid due to its being a thawing agent.

Lab: In addition to general sterilization of equipment IPA is used in molecular reactions for nucleic acid detection and can concentrate and purify DNA in large sample sizes efficiently. It is used in diluting, and extracting chemicals, and has the ability to act as a preservative and dehydrating agent to assist in sample preservation.

Cosmetic: ACS-grade IPA is frequently used to develop personal care products such as aftershaves, lotions, perfumes, sanitizers, personal cleaners, and other cosmetics. When added to polish IPA 99% aids in the smooth application, when cleaning it leaves the perfect shine due to its quick evaporation.
